QR codes

The QR code on a wine label: how it works

Rather than printing mandatory statements on an already crowded back label, regulation allows them to be made accessible by QR code. Here is what it must contain and how it is produced.

What it must give

What the QR code must make accessible

The QR code leads to a page presenting the energy value, ingredient list and allergens. That page must stay neutral: no commercial content mixed in, and no tracking of the consumer.

It is a constraint of form as much as substance: a page mixing mandatory statements with brand messaging is not compliant.

Production

How a compliant QR code is generated

  1. 01 The laboratory analyses Alcoholic strength, sugars, density: values come from the report, not from typing.
  2. 02 Calculating the values Energy value is computed from alcohol and sugars, following a known method.
  3. 03 The hosted page A neutral page is published at a stable address, with no authentication and no tracking.
  4. 04 The printed QR code It points to that address. What sits behind it stays editable after printing.

Why this choice

What a QR code offers over direct printing

  • Room on the labelMandatory statements are long. Moving them off the label frees the layout.
  • Fixable afterwardsAn error or a vintage change is corrected without reprinting labels.
  • MultilingualThe page shows in the visitor’s language, without multiplying printed versions.
  • GS1 Digital Link readyThe industry standard lets one code serve both logistics and the consumer.
