How a wine’s energy value is calculated
A wine’s energy value is calculated from four components, each contributing a known number of calories per gram. Their contributions are added together, expressed per 100 ml.

The formula
kcal/100 ml = (ABV × 0.79 × 7) + (sugars ÷ 10 × 4) + (polyols ÷ 10 × 2.4) + (acids ÷ 10 × 3)
Contents are given in g/L while the result is per 100 ml, hence the division by 10.
An example
A wine at 12.5% vol. with 2 g/L sugars, 7 g/L polyols and 6 g/L organic acids: (12.5 × 0.79 × 7) + (0.2 × 4) + (0.7 × 2.4) + (0.6 × 3) = 73.4 kcal per 100 ml, or 304.6 kJ.
What matters for the label
The value shown on the label is expressed per 100 ml, in both kJ and kcal, rounded to the nearest unit. It must appear alongside ingredients and allergens.
