How many calories are in a glass of wine?

A wine’s energy value comes almost entirely from its alcohol, and marginally from its sugars. Here is what a glass actually contains, and how that value is calculated for the label.

Wine no longer escapes nutritional labelling

Wine long escaped food labelling rules. Yet it contains alcohol, which is highly energetic, and sometimes significant residual sugars.

Displaying energy value answers an expectation of transparency and allows better-informed consumption. It is now mandatory for any wine on the European market.

The calculation

How energy value is calculated

Each component contributes a known number of calories per gram: alcohol 7 kcal/g, sugars 4 kcal/g, organic acids 3 kcal/g and polyols 2.4 kcal/g. One degree of alcohol equals 0.79 grams of ethanol per 100 ml.

Why two wines differ

  • Alcoholic strengthBy far the first factor. Two degrees of difference weigh more than several grams of sugar.
  • Residual sugarsA dry wine holds little. A medium-sweet or sweet wine changes the total noticeably.
  • The type of wineSparkling, naturally sweet and aromatised wines have different profiles.
  • Reliability of the dataThe value must come from an analysis or a standardised calculation, not an estimate.
