CALORIES IN WINE? EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT NUTRITIONAL VALUES

Starting December 2024, winemakers will be required to display nutritional values on wine, in compliance with European regulation EU 2021/2117. Among the most requested information: the number of calories, expressed in kilocalories (kcal) and kilojoules (kJ). But what exactly does a glass of wine contain? And how do you calculate the energy value of a bottle?

Why are nutritional values important in wine?

Traditionally, wine has been exempt from food labeling rules. However:

  • Wine contains alcohol, which has energy value,
  • Some wines contain residual sugars,
  • Consumers increasingly demand transparency.

Nutritional values help meet these expectations and allow for more informed consumption.

What must be included in wine nutritional labeling?

Here are the mandatory elements to display:

  • Energy value (in kJ and kcal) per 100 ml,
  • Fat content (including saturated fatty acids),
  • Carbohydrates (including sugars),
  • Proteins,
  • Salt.

⚠️ This data must be reliable, derived from analyses or standardized calculations.

How is the energy value of wine calculated?

The calculation is based on:

  • Alcohol content (% vol),
  • Residual sugar level (g/L),
  • Wine density.

Formulas validated by the European Union allow for precise determination of total calories. Example:

100 ml of wine at 13% vol = approximately 85 kcal.

Examples of nutritional values for different types of wine

Wine typeCalories per 100 mlAverage sugars
Dry red wine (13%)~85 kcal< 1 g
Medium-sweet white wine (12%)~100 kcal4-6 g
Dry rosé wine (12.5%)~80 kcal< 1 g
Brut Champagne~70 kcal1-1.5 g
